About the organization: The Yukon River Drainage Fisheries Association (YRDFA) was formed in 1991 when fishing leaders from the Alaska portion of the Yukon River and its main tributaries gathered together to work on salmon fisheries issues along the Yukon River. Over time, YRDFA has matured into an organization through which fishing families throughout the Yukon River drainage work together by sharing information and perspectives at decision-making forums. YRDFA has developed unique outreach and education programs, addressed threats to salmon in the marine environment, and implemented traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) research, as well as offered training and employment to sustain the fishing way of life along the Yukon River. Our board members and alternates live along the Yukon River and work to achieve our mission of protecting and promoting all healthy wild fisheries and cultures along the Yukon River.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a Fisheries Biologist to join our team. The position will support staff on various projects along with oversight of Yukon River research, monitoring, and evaluation activities including:
Providing communication and outreach to Yukon River stakeholders including state and federal fishery managers and other partnering organizations
Educating and informing Yukon River communities about current fisheries issues relating to the Yukon River Salmon Agreement and help build support for meaningful participation by fishing families in fisheries management

YRDFA will provide a computer and printer and other office supplies necessary to do the job successfully virtually. YRDFA reimburses for internet, phone, and utilities currently at $300 per month.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Yukon River Drainage Fisheries Association (YRDFA) seeks a Fisheries Biologist to work in its Anchorage or Fairbanks office. This is a full-time, exempt position that will have scientific research and analytical duties. This position reports directly to the Executive Director.
A summary of the role but not limited to:
- Provide scientific analysis of salmon stocks
- Review and evaluate in-season management information from the Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADFG) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS)
- Represent YRDFA at the Yukon River Panel and participate in Panel meetings
- Provide scientific input and expertise on a broad range of marine, in-river management and habitat issues and proposals to inform YRDFA’s policy advocacy
- Lead presentations at YRDFA Board meetings on fisheries issues
- Produce outreach materials on salmon science for fishermen along the Yukon River to keep fishermen informed of fisheries issues in the larger scientific community
- Conduct field studies and data analysis for YRDFA and collaborative projects
- Assist with producing GIS maps
- Represent YRDFA at fisheries meetings
- With the YRDFA Board of Directors and staff, develop YRDFA’s science direction and craft a strategy to achieve YRDFA’s short and long term goals
- Develop new projects which further these goals and submit applications for funding
- Work collaboratively with fishermen, agencies, Tribes, non-governmental organizations, scientists and all YRDFA staff
Qualifications:
- M.S. degree or higher in fisheries or biology or B.S. with extensive experience in the fisheries field; a branch of limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry or natural resource management OR
- Seven years of professional experience as a fisheries, wildlife, or habitat biologist that includes at least one year as a program manager or technical expert or two years at an advanced professional level
- At least 2 years of professional experience as a fisheries biologist
- Experience planning and conducting field studies and data analysis
- Demonstrated interest in fisheries management and the intersection of science and policy
- Knowledge of rural Alaska issues, Alaska Native and Yukon River communities preferred
Certificates and Licenses Required: A valid Alaska Driver’s license is required for this position and the ability to be insured on YRDFA’s vehicle insurance policy.
